Booklet Printing
Create booklet impositions for folded, saddle-stitched printing.
What is Booklet Imposition?
Booklet imposition rearranges pages so they print correctly when folded:
- Pages are positioned for double-sided printing
- When printed and folded, pages appear in reading order
- Used for brochures, magazines, and small books
A booklet is created by printing on sheets that are folded in half and nested together. Page positioning is critical for the final order to be correct.
Booklet Basics
How It Works
For a simple 8-page booklet on 2 sheets:
Sheet 1 (outside):
- Front: Page 8 (left) + Page 1 (right)
- Back: Page 2 (left) + Page 7 (right)
Sheet 2 (inside):
- Front: Page 6 (left) + Page 3 (right)
- Back: Page 4 (left) + Page 5 (right)
When folded and nested, pages read 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.
Page Requirements
- Page count should be a multiple of 4
- If not, blank pages are added automatically
- All pages should be the same size

Creep Adjustment
What is Creep?
When multiple sheets are nested, inner pages extend further than outer pages after folding. This causes the inside pages to appear shifted outward.
Compensating for Creep
Estimate Creep Amount
Creep depends on:
- Number of sheets
- Paper thickness
- Binding method
Set Creep Compensation
In booklet settings, adjust:
- Auto: Penvio calculates based on page count
- Manual: Enter specific value
- None: No adjustment

Creep Guidelines
| Page Count | Suggested Compensation |
|---|---|
| 8-16 pages | Minimal (0.5-1mm) |
| 20-32 pages | Moderate (1-2mm) |
| 36-48 pages | More (2-3mm) |
| 52+ pages | Consider perfect binding |
Printer Marks
Adding Marks
Include marks for professional printing:
| Mark | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Trim marks | Show where to cut |
| Fold marks | Indicate fold lines |
| Registration marks | Align color plates |
| Color bars | Verify color accuracy |
Mark Settings
- Length: How long the marks extend
- Offset: Distance from trim edge
- Weight: Line thickness
Bleed Settings
What is Bleed?
Bleed is content that extends past the trim edge. It ensures no white edges appear after trimming.
Setting Bleed
- In booklet settings, set Bleed value
- Typical: 3mm (0.125”) on each edge
- Content must extend into bleed area
Your source document must have content extending into the bleed area. Penvio cannot add bleed content that doesn’t exist.
Gutter Settings
What is the Gutter?
The gutter is extra space at the binding edge. It prevents content from being hidden in the fold.
Setting Gutter
- Inside margin: Space at the fold
- Compensation: Additional space for thicker booklets
- Typical: 10-15mm for saddle stitch

Troubleshooting
Pages Out of Order
Cause: Incorrect imposition settings Fix: Verify binding edge and page arrangement
Content Cut Off
Cause: Margins too small Fix: Increase gutter or outer margins
Misaligned After Folding
Cause: Creep not compensated Fix: Enable creep adjustment
Blank Pages Appearing
Cause: Page count not multiple of 4 Fix: Normal—blanks fill to complete signatures
