Audit Trail

Comprehensive logging of all signing activity.

E-Sign features require a Pro plan or higher.

What is an Audit Trail?

An audit trail is a chronological record of all actions taken during the signing process:

  • Who did what
  • When they did it
  • Where they were (IP address)
  • System information

Captured Events

Envelope Events

Event Details

Each event captures:

  • Timestamp: Exact date and time (UTC)
  • Actor: Who performed the action
  • Action: What was done
  • IP Address: Network location
  • User Agent: Browser/device info
  • Location: Geographic location (if available)

Hash Chain Integrity

Events are cryptographically linked:

  1. Each event has a SHA-256 hash
  2. Each hash includes the previous hash
  3. Chain cannot be modified without detection
  4. Tamper-evident by design

Viewing the Audit Trail

In the Dashboard

  1. Open the envelope
  2. Click Audit Trail tab
  3. View all events chronologically

In Completed Documents

Audit trail summary is included in:

  • Certificate of Completion (attached PDF page)
  • Downloadable audit report

Exporting Audit Trails

PDF Export

  1. Open the envelope
  2. Click ExportAudit Trail PDF
  3. Download the formatted report

JSON Export

For integration and record-keeping:

  1. Use the API to retrieve audit events
  2. Store in your systems
  3. Include in compliance archives

Audit trails serve as evidence:

  • Prove document was signed
  • Establish timeline
  • Demonstrate identity verification
  • Support legal proceedings

Retention

Audit trails are retained:

  • As long as the document exists
  • Minimum 7 years (configurable)
  • Enterprise can set custom retention
  • Cannot be deleted independently

  • Download audit trails for important documents
  • Store copies in your record system
  • Review for any anomalies
  • Use as part of compliance documentation
