Prepare a PDF for Print

Get your document ready for professional printing.

Always check with your print provider for their specific requirements before preparing files.

Quick Checklist

Before sending to print, verify:

  • Correct page size and orientation
  • Bleed area (if required)
  • Fonts embedded
  • Images at sufficient resolution
  • Colors in CMYK (for commercial print)
  • No transparency issues
  • Preflight passed

Step-by-Step Guide

Check Page Size

  1. Click FilePropertiesPages
  2. Verify page dimensions match requirements
  3. Check all pages are consistent

Run Preflight

Identify potential issues:

  1. Click ToolsPreflightRun Preflight
  2. Select Print Ready profile
  3. Click Analyze
  4. Review results

Fix Common Issues

Address any problems found:

Font issues:

  • Embed all fonts: ToolsFontsEmbed

Image issues:

  • Check resolution: minimum 300 DPI for print
  • Replace low-resolution images if needed

Color issues:

Final Preflight

Run preflight again to confirm all issues resolved:

Bleed

If your design extends to the edge:

  • Add 3mm (0.125”) bleed on all sides
  • Extend content into bleed area
  • Set up trim marks

Convert to PDF/X

For guaranteed print compatibility:

  2. Select PDF/X-4 (recommended)
  3. Set output intent profile
  4. Click Convert
  5. Validate the result

Tips

  • Keep a copy of your original file before flattening
  • Ask your printer for a preflight profile if available
  • Include trim marks and bleed for professional printing
  • Test print a proof before final production
  • Provide a printed sample with the file when possible
