What is the ESIGN Act?

The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN Act) is a US federal law that:

  • Grants electronic signatures the same legal status as handwritten signatures
  • Allows contracts to be signed electronically
  • Requires consumer consent for electronic transactions

Enacted in 2000, it enables businesses to conduct transactions electronically.
